Attendance Information

Every Bulldog Every Day

WHY ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Regular school attendance is essential to student success. Consistent attendance supports academic achievement, classroom participation, and social development, while excessive absences can negatively impact a student’s progress toward graduation and future success.

Attendance is required for all students on days and during the hours when school is in session. Green Local Schools follows all applicable Ohio attendance laws, including House Bill 96, and Board Policy 5200. HB 96 strengthens requirements to monitor and address student attendance and chronic absenteeism, while supporting early intervention and collaboration with families to promote regular attendance and student success.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS: KNOW THE THRESHOLDS

Missed instructional time adds up—even when an absence is excused. The District monitors total hours missed for any reason, including excused, medical, unexcused, and suspension-related absences.

⚫️ 5% Missed Hours | Early Outreach
When a student has missed approximately 5% of the minimum instructional hours required by law, approximately 45 hours, the District will notify the parent/guardian. Applies to total missed time for any reason (excused, medical, unexcused, and suspensions).

  • An attendance notification letter will be sent to the parent/guardian.
  • The purpose is to identify attendance concerns early and provide support before absences become a barrier to learning.

⚫️ 10% Missed Hours | Chronic Absenteeism & Intervention
When a student has missed 10% or more of the minimum instructional hours required by law, approximately 90 hours, the student is considered chronically absent. Applies to total missed time for any reason (excused, medical, unexcused, and suspensions).

  • The District will notify the parent/guardian and work with the student and family to identify barriers to attendance and develop an appropriate intervention plan.
  • After reaching this threshold, future absences due to personal illness will only be considered excused with a physician’s note. The note must be provided within five (5) school days of the absence.

*Important: The 5% and 10% thresholds are based on total instructional hours missed, regardless of whether the absences are excused or unexcused.

HABITUAL TRUANCY (UNEXCUSED HOURS)

Under Ohio law, a student may be considered habitually truant when the student is absent without a legitimate excuse (unexcused) for:

  • 30 or more consecutive hours
  • 42 or more hours in one school month, or
  • 72 or more hours in one school year

When a student reaches the habitual truancy threshold, the District will take appropriate steps to address attendance and may involve the District’s attendance officer and the juvenile court when required by law. The District’s goal is to work with students and families to improve attendance and address barriers before more intensive action is necessary.

ATTENDANCE INTERVENTIONS & SUPPORT

The District uses a tiered system of interventions and supports to help students improve attendance. The level of support increases as attendance concerns become more significant.
Interventions may include:

  • Counseling or support for the student
  • Meetings with parents/guardians
  • Truancy prevention or mediation services
  • An Absence Intervention Team (AIT)
  • Attendance Intervention Plan, Interventions, and Monitoring
  • Other appropriate school or community resources
  • Legal action when required by Ohio law

The District’s Absence Intervention Team works with students and families who are at risk of becoming chronically absent to identify barriers and develop strategies to improve attendance.

Reporting an Absence

Parents/guardians must notify the school when a student will be absent and provide the reason for the absence.

Please notify the Attendance Office by 9:30 a.m. each day the student is absent.

📞 Attendance Line: 330-896-7583 (24-hour voicemail is available)

When leaving a message, please provide:

  • Student's full name
  • Parent/guardian name and relationship to the student
  • Grade level
  • Homeroom teacher
  • Reason for the absence

Online Call-Off
As another option for reporting a child's absence, the Online Call-Off Form may be used.

If the School Has Not Been Notified

If the school does not receive notification of an absence within 120 minutes after the beginning of the school day, the District will make at least one attempt to contact the parent/guardian in accordance with Ohio law. When no legitimate excuse is provided, the absence will be recorded as unexcused.

A skipped class or portion of the school day is considered an unexcused absence and may result in disciplinary action. Students may not be permitted to make up work missed because of an unexcused absence.

Excused Absences

Students may be excused from school for circumstances permitted by Ohio law and Board Policy 5200. Examples include:

  • Personal illness (a physician's statement verifying the illness may be required)
  • Health care appointments
  • Illness in the family requiring the student's presence
  • Quarantine of the home
  • Death in the family
  • Necessary work at home due to a parent/guardian's absence or incapacity
  • Approved religious expression days
  • District-approved enrichment or extracurricular activities involving out-of-state travel
  • Other good cause approved by the Superintendent
  • Medically necessary leave for a pregnant student
  • Service as a precinct election officer, as permitted by law
  • College visitation
  • Certain absences related to foster care placement or court proceedings
  • Absences due to homelessness

The District may require documentation to verify an absence and reserves the right to investigate absences when appropriate.

Religious Expression Days

Students may receive accommodations for absences related to sincerely held religious or spiritual beliefs and practices. Parents/guardians must submit a written request to the Principal within:

  • 14 days after the beginning of the school year, or
  • 14 days after the student enrolls in the District.

The request should identify the religious expression day(s) for which the accommodation is requested. Up to three (3) religious expression days may be approved each school year. Students with approved religious expression absences will not receive an academic penalty and will be provided reasonable accommodations for missed examinations or other academic requirements. Students may also participate in interscholastic athletics and other extracurricular activities on approved religious expression days.

For additional information, including a non-exhaustive list of major religious holidays, visit the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce's Religious Expression Holiday List.

Make-Up Work

Students with an excused absence will be given an opportunity to make up missed assignments and tests.

Students should contact their teachers as soon as possible after returning to school.
Students generally have the same number of school days to complete make-up work as they were absent.
Missed tests should be arranged with the teacher.
State-mandated or standardized assessments will be rescheduled as appropriate.
Students are responsible for completing all assigned make-up work.

Teachers will make reasonable efforts to provide appropriate make-up work. However, assignments may not always be available before an absence and will not be provided in a manner that would create an undue burden on the teacher or disrupt instruction.

Unexcused absences may result in a zero for graded coursework completed or due on the day of the absence.

Vacations During the School Year

Families are encouraged to plan vacations outside of the school calendar whenever possible. When a vacation during the school year is unavoidable, parents/guardians should notify the school in advance.

Vacation Requirements

  1. Provide written notification at least three (3) days in advance.
  2. No more than five (5) days per school year will be counted as excused vacation absences.
  3. Complete and return a Vacation Form to the Attendance/Main Office.
  4. Students and parents/guardians are responsible for ensuring that missed work is completed.
  5. Assigned work that can be provided before the trip will be due upon the student's return. Additional make-up work may be assigned by the teacher.

Please note that make-up work may not always be available before a student leaves for vacation.

Tardiness

A student who is not in their assigned location at the beginning of the allotted instructional day is considered tardy. Students arriving late to school must report to the School Office before going to class.

Homebound Instruction

The District may arrange individual instruction at home for students who are unable to attend school due to an accident, illness, or disability. Homebound instruction may be considered upon receipt of appropriate documentation from a physician.

Suspensions

Absences resulting from a school suspension are considered authorized absences.
Students are responsible for completing schoolwork missed during a suspension. Teachers will provide assignments and arrange make-up opportunities for missed tests as appropriate.
